England & Wales - Historical Directories Online, Free

Easter this year was very busy for us. Hope it was a lovely time for everyone ... given the crappy weather we're having today it's hard to remember the last two days that were very nice, albeit windy.

Regarding the Historical Directories .... here ya go http://leicester.contentdm.oclc.org/cdm/map/collection/p16445coll4

This is an interesting article written by Dick Eastman. I definitely want to try it out! If anyone is using it, I'd love to hear your experiences. http://blog.eogn.com/eastmans_online_genealogy/2014/04/dropbox-carousel.html

Guild of One Name Studies Conference - Online and FREE

You know it just keeps getting better and better! So much is now free online. It looks like there are 5 sessions, including the AGM here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7k7qmgKV6jk Even the AGM session is very interesting - seldom the case in my opinion.

For those with US ancestors, Fold3 is making it's Civil War Collection free for the above dates. I'm not having much success ... yet ... but it's free so no complaints. http://go.fold3.com/civilwar/

Here's a chance to create a new password and see how it works! If you have no idea what I'm talking about, read my previous post.

Ancestry.com - Library Edition Comparison

Anyone accessing Ancestry via their local library is using a different version of Ancestry than those who pay subscriptions to access from their home computer. But what is the difference? Here are some links to compare the two http://proquest.libguides.com/content.php?pid=322379&sid=2666575

Passwords - creating new EASY to remember passwords

Hi Everyone!
Have arrived home, safe and sound, after having an amazing winter. We drove through 1 province, 14 States, and travelled over 7,000 kms!! Stayed ahead of winter blizzards going down - although just barely - had fantastic weather in Arizona/California/Nevada where we stayed since January - and great weather coming home. Sadly our weather is crappy here now, but *hopefully* by next week we'll all be poking around outside looking for things sprouting in our yards.

In the meantime we're all dealing with the fallout from the Heartbleed bug. We're being told to change all our passwords! Yikes ... are you kidding me? Thomas MacEntee to the rescue. I've tried his method out over the past few days and I like it. You can create a new password for each website you use AND have no problems remembering each one. Honest!! Watch his video and best of luck everyone. http://hackgenealogy.com/video-password-trick/

GRONI online

OK, so I've not taken a ton of time to play within this new site, but I've already found some good, some bad, and some ugly. Whatever, for those of us researching in Northern Ireland it offers some new opportunities. One of the features is the townland maps. Sadly they have not included the numbers associated from either Griffith's or Applotments [there may be copyright issues], BUT because maps are so critical to our research these will certainly help in placing the townlands in the larger context. If you would like to share your experience using this new website with me I'd love that!

Thanks to Chris Paton over at The British GENES Blog for this. http://britishgenes.blogspot.com/2014/03/groni-launches-online-civil-records.html?utm_source=feedburner&utm_medium=email&utm_campaign=Feed%3A+BritishGenesGenealogyNewsAndEvents+%28British+GENES+%28GEnealogy+News+and+EventS%29%29
